4 Crappy Causes Of Loose Skin

What are the causes of loose skin

The Battle With Loose Skin

The causes of loose skin can vary. The bad part is that many of us don’t even notice it at first. Loose skin. Just hanging there mocking you. You’ve worked out with exercises targeting the area with the loose skin. But nothing changes.

Your battle is bigger than you think. Unfortunately, working out will not simply solve the issue in many cases. When this happens, seeking treatment should be your next step. Loose skin can happen to anyone, but not everyone can fix the issue themselves.

Causes of Loose Skin

When your skin is firm and strong, it has no issue adjusting to your body size and weight. But when your skin begins to lose this ability, skin becomes loose and can begin to sag. This can happen almost anywhere on the body. The most common places this happens are:

  • The eyelids
  • Chin
  • Throat/neck area
  • The upper arm area
  • Stomach
  • The jaw/cheek area

There are causes of loose skin on the body. Below are the 5 main causes. Some may surprise you.

1. Weight Loss

Losing weight can be a great health benefit. But if you’ve been overweight for an extended amount of time, your skin doesn’t have the strength to snap back. Collagen and elastin fibers in the skin that were weakened and damaged take longer to react to the loss of weight in the body.

This usually occurs when weight loss is more rapid than natural weight loss. The skin doesn’t have a chance to adjust and begins to sag at the voided areas. This can, unfortunately, lead to significant sagging skin.

Of course, the younger you are, the stronger your skin is. So your age can depend on how your skin snaps back after a noticeable weight loss.

2. Aging

Aging has its ups and downs. Loose skin can be one of the downs. As we age, the skin begins to lose two important proteins that keep your skin healthy and able to adjust. They are collagen and elastin.

Collagen is like a magic fiber that keeps your skin tight and able to react to body size changes. In fact, collagen is the reason for firm skin.

There are, however, some external reasons your skin losing its strength. Coupled with age, these factors are also causes of loose skin:

  • Pollutants in your environment
  • A lot of exposure to UV rays
  • Poor nutrition, alcohol, and smoking

Too much exposure to the sun without protection over time will begin to alter your skin. Saggy and loose skin will begin to develop.

3. Pregnancy

Saggy and loose skin is common after pregnancy. The highest and most extreme occurrences happen when women carry multiple babies at once or just have one huge baby.

This results in the skin being stretched from pregnancies like this leave the skin damaged and unable to bounce back to what it was.

4. Illness

Causes of loose skin can include illness. Unfortunately, many people don’t know this. A condition called,  cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, also known as granulomatous slack skin, can cause saggy skin.

The skin on the elbow and knees usually suffer from sagging due to the illness. Unfortunately, granulomatous slack skin does not respond well to treatment.

Another condition that causes loose skin is called, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). Not too many people know about this syndrome. It’s an inherited condition that leads to saggy skin, usually in the face, caused by a collagen production defect.
